Have you heard about social enterprises? We aren’t talking about Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. We are talking about One Big Table, Habitat for Humanity Okanagan, and The Big Edition.

A social enterprise is an organization setup to sell goods or services to help achieve community, social, or environmental objectives. It can be run as a non-profit, for profit, charity, co-op, or hybrid like a Community Contribution Company, but the majority of its profits must be directed at achieving social objectives.

Purppl is a social enterprise accelerator that helps social entrepreneurs start and grow their impact-driven companies (for profit, non-profit, co-op, hybrid). Through a combination of experienced entrepreneurs and mentors, business model development, and creating an ecosystem of support, we have been working to help build predictable, sustainable revenue models alongside social entrepreneurs. 

A few examples of social enterprises that we have worked with include:

  • One Big Table is a cooperatively owned grocery store and catering company dedicated to providing access to local food to its customers. Through their relationship with the John Howard Society, they also aim to provide employment opportunities to individuals that have experienced barriers in finding meaningful employment. Purppl helped to test and establish their diverse revenue model which includes cafe, grocery, and catering.

  • Habitat for Humanity Okanagan is a non-profit housing organization that empowers families to invest in home ownership. They have been in the Okanagan Valley for over 20 years having built 22 homes and provided affordable interest mortgages to for each family to help enable ownership. Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories, building materials that uses all proceeds to help support their building program in the Okanagan. Purppl is helping Habitat to improve communication and segmentation of their stakeholders while also exploring new partnerships to enhance the impact of their build program.

  • The Big Edition is a street newspaper that is being developed and will be sold by members of the Lived Experience Committee in Kamloops – individuals who have experienced, or may be experiencing, homelessness. Vendors from the committee will purchase the publication for resale and keep the proceeds they collect. It’s a model that’s working in about 100 cities worldwide but hasn’t been done yet in Kamloops. Purppl is helping to establish a minimum viable product, initiate business partnerships, and a sustainable revenue model.
